The Principal Mechanical Engineer will design cutting-edge operating room equipment, including patient support structures, electromechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic actuators, and related accessories. This individual will drive product innovation through creative problem-solving and lead product concepts from inception to production. This role requires maintaining up-to-date knowledge of competitive technologies, including medical, technical, manufacturing, and materials developments, and ensuring meticulous design history documentation.
This is a full-time non-hybrid on-site position in Union City.
We are looking for you if you can:
- Design metal, plastic, and carbon composite patient support structures for use in operating rooms meeting requirements for stiffness, strength, stability, reliability, and cost.
- Design user-actuated mechanisms and electro-mechanical drive trains to articulate these structures to optimize patient positioning, surgical access, and applied traction.
- Work with a diverse group of motivated individuals within the mechanical engineering team as well as peers in other R&D, manufacturing, clinical, marketing, and service teams.
Responsibilities:
- Design metal, plastic, and carbon composite patient support structures, ensuring they meet rigorous requirements for stiffness, strength, stability, reliability, and cost.
- Develop user-actuated mechanisms and electromechanical drive trains to optimize patient positioning, surgical access, and applied traction.
- Work independently or within cross-functional teams to design, develop, and test products that align with system specifications.
- Collaborate with New Product Introduction (NPI) teams to optimize product designs for manufacturing.
- Evaluate field feedback from Service and Marketing to enhance product performance.
- Maintain ongoing communication with Manufacturing and Marketing to address and improve product needs.
- Continuously contribute to product improvement and cost reduction initiatives.
- Participate in vendor selection, sustaining engineering, QC inspection, and material review board activities.
- Provide technical guidance and support to other engineers and designers, and lead projects as required.
- Maintain clear and effective verbal and written communication.
- Adhere to internal Quality System policies, procedures, and work instructions, including relevant external regulations (e.g., 21 CFR Part 820) and applicable International Standards.
