About Our Client
Our client is a global strategy, technology, and innovation consultancy, with thousands of consultants, engineers, designers, and scientists working across multiple continents. They partner with organizations across consumer and manufacturing, defense, energy, financial services, government, health and life sciences, and transport — guiding clients through the full product lifecycle, from early strategy and prototyping through regulatory approval and market launch.
Their Consumer and Manufacturing practice is a significant growth priority, with mechanical engineering as one of its core disciplines. The team operates from multiple U.S. innovation studios, including one in the greater Boston area, and is looking for a senior technical leader to help set the strategic direction of the practice while continuing to deliver complex, multi-disciplinary programs for clients.
The Opportunity
Our client is seeking a Consulting Director to lead their Consumer and Manufacturing mechanical engineering practice from their studio in the greater Boston area. This is a senior leadership role that blends hands-on technical delivery with commercial growth and people leadership, and calls for a strong in-person presence (4–5 days onsite most weeks). As Consulting Director, you will be expected to:
- Lead Complex Program Delivery: Own the technical and commercial delivery of the firm's most complex, multi-disciplinary engagements — from early ideation through implementation — managing risk, quality, and cross-functional teams to strong client outcomes.
- Drive Business Growth: Identify and qualify new opportunities, and win large, multi-capability engagements that expand the firm's presence in the Consumer and Manufacturing sector.
- Set Practice Strategy: Shape the strategic direction of mechanical engineering across the firm's U.S. studios, aligning capability development with commercial priorities.
- Advise Client Leadership: Act as a trusted senior advisor to client executives, shaping strategy and defining solutions that elevate both business and technical performance.
- Build and Mentor Talent: Coach and develop consultants and engineers, building a strong pipeline of technical and leadership talent, and serve as a local culture leader for the studio.
What You Bring
To succeed in this role, you bring deep mechanical engineering expertise paired with proven commercial and people leadership. The ideal candidate has/is:
- Deep Technical Expertise: 15+ years in mechanical engineering and product development, with a BS/MS in Mechanical Engineering or a related field, and a strong first-principles grounding across mechatronics, structures, dynamics, thermal/fluid systems, controls, or precision mechanisms.
- Proven Consulting Leadership: A strong record leading complex, multi-disciplinary consulting engagements, with significant experience in commercial leadership, business development, and account management.
- Cross-Industry Program Experience: Demonstrated leadership of expert, cross-industry teams, particularly in electromechanical systems and user-centered design, ideally with ISO 9001 experience.
- Technical Tools Fluency: Proficiency with 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and engineering analysis tools such as Python, MATLAB, or FEA.
- Executive Presence: Excellent communication skills, with extensive client-facing experience and the ability to engage confidently with executive leaders, clients, and technical teams.
- A Collaborative, Coaching Mindset: A track record of mentoring and developing talent, with a leadership style that inspires high performance and continuous learning.
